How has racism overtly impacted your life?

- Being kicked of a geometry honors class with a 63% D when the white boy who had a low F (and was always disruptive) got to stay.

- Having to cut myself off from someone who refused to see their racist tendencies.

- An ingrained sense of looking as inconspicuous as possible when I take walks because otherwise I might look suspicious to all my white neighbors. (I’m always telling my mom not to “stare so hard” and she calls me “communist” for it, but she just doesn’t get it since she’s not black)

spent most of my childhood actually avoiding the sun cause people kept telling me i would get darker as if that were a bad thing.

had people touching my hair and then pulling on it and asking if it hurt when they pull (the fuck did they think i was invincible????)

i also had to adjust myself so i would act proper in front of everyone. like i didnt allow myself to slack, i basically adopted code switching because i felt like i had to be a good example of my race. because even as a child i knew if i acted up in some kinda way people would blame it on my race, and not on me.

Having guys call me exotic or completely sexualize me but never want to date me…and expecting me to feel grateful juwt because I’m overweight

Hating how my hair natural looked and wanting to straighten in all the time, suffered from heat damage and how to go natural all over again even though i’d been natural from stopping getting perms

Internalized the notion that dark skin was ugly and that I didnt wanna get darker, i was “glad” i wasnt darker

These are all honestly so horrible but i feel like we need to acknowledge internally how racism fucks us up, because the way I was 3 years agao versus how I am now is so totally different and Im glad for that. But that type of thinking is degenerative and deterriorating and I dont know how I ever thought that way before. Racism affects your subconcious, especially that of a 13 year old black girl who’s being subtly shown that she isnt beautiful after all. WE NEED TO

Hating the shape of other people’s eyes as a kid because they had monolids and hating that I looked like I had monolids

Being afraid to ask school counselors for help because they’re all white and have no clue how parenting works in my culture

Having to do everything and do it extra-well and trying to be mediocre on SATs so I don’t look “too Asian” on my resume

Being accused of plagiarism because the professor didn’t think a Black person was capable of knowing SAT words.

Being accused of getting my job based on affirmative action and not based on the strength of my work history and resumé.

Being called a n*gger in the middle of 3rd period biology and being suspended for retaliating while the girl only got written up.

Sexually harassed and assaulted because ‘Black girls are naturally slutty.’

White people asking if my siblings are actually my children as if that’s somehow normal.

Being told I’m ‘articulate’ and ‘intelligent’ as if implying I’m incapable of either because of ‘reasons.’

Being told that a white celebrity ‘doesn’t like Black girls’ and thus I cannot crush on them (this was my first encounter with a white child).

Being called ‘burnt toast’ and other epithets insulting my skintone.

The list goes on but most of it I’d rather not bring up. Too painful.

PWI short version:

Being embarassed when I let aave slip because I got laughed at every time.

Being made to feel like I’d gotten some charity because I and got into a “good” school.

Literally being felt up by alumni who were so polite to the white girls.

Getting slurs screamed at me from hicks in cars.

Weeks long extreme anxiety and fear of being attacked after school had hella racist incidents tailored to the black population on campus (bonus points: I lived in the designated “black house”).

And now? Heightened depression and anxiety after living at a small PWI for four years and seeing myself and friends AND faculty suffer.

Being called an oreo and having it demanded of me to rap in order to prove my blackness.
